So my wife’s TDI is going to be bought back in a few months. She refuses to drive a car “That the liberals have had their way with”, so we’re pretty much locked in for a buyback. My wife is also pretty set on a Subcompact crossover.
Ironically, what had been the front runner was knocked off the list when we went to see it earlier today. The car is much bigger outside than in (and it’s not particularly big out the outside), and has some mediocre, at best, visibility. Let’s go on to the remaining 2:
Probably in second place of the two is the Buick Encore. In-person, she loves the way it looks, and the stance and equipment levels are solid choices. We didn’t get to sit in one, but the Sport Touring model with its newer 1.4T and strong all around value makes a compelling argument. Now onto 1st:
Currently the front-runner is the Honda HR-V. She’s been in one, and like the interior quite a bit. None of the contestants have been driven yet, so that may end up being the tie-breaker. Not as big of an issue to my wife, but I do have a beef with the HR-V. I actually love the car, but it’s let down by the fact that under the hood lies a 2006 Civic engine. Not necessarily a terrible engine at all, but the R18 is old technology. Like I said though, less important to her. So that’s where we’re at.
Also, I was very impressed by the Buick/GMC dealer near the new house, so that’s a possible option regarding my other posts.

I’d go with the HR-V, BUT, maybe you want to wait for the Kia Niro to come around?
It’s a hybrid, yes, but it’s a NORMAL car otherwise. Got a dual clutch transmission, instead of a CVT like most hybrids too.
Or, if you don’t want a Hybrid, a Soul would be a pretty good option too.

The HR-v is a great little car - Honda is going to sell a bunch of them. I’d have a hard time driving a VW too knowing how blatant the corporate fraud was... good choice to cash out.

What does she think of the Mazda CX-3? There’s not much of a “lift”, but for the price of an encore you can get it absolutely loaded.

That liberals have had their way with? We don’t have anything to do with this ....

HR-V is great. Only reason we aren’t considering one is because I don’t fit.
And I thought the stereotypical TDI buyer was liberal?

That little “Jeep” is surprisingly popular in my parts. I’m trying to avoid a long term payment but that thing is on my short list of new cars.

Check out the Mazda CX-3. But, the HR-V seems nice, too. I’d steer clear of the Renegade at all costs. They’ve had constant reliability and drivability problems since day one.
The Encore is incredibly popular around here, so GM must be doing something right with those.

It’s your damn liberal epa trying to tell me I have to regulate my emissions. It’s why I only buy old diesels and then tune them to roll coal everywhere. I also never shut them off. I have 3 trucks running right now. Just fill them up as needed. Take that polar bear hugging hippies.
*end scene*

The corporate fraud thing actually doesn’t play into it. We are both okay with VWs decision. But unfortunately, there seems to be a whole mess of dificultness coming for those that want their TDIs to remain unchanged.
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:18 |

She’s of the mind that the EPA is only around to further the oppresive liberal green agenda. I’ve tried to explain to her that they’re probably a mixed bag of beliefs, but paid for by all the companies that need green to make money. But she believes people’s need to push their beliefs on others trumps greed (which it never does).

She said She didn’t like that either. Thanks for trying, that thing is awesome looking.

She can’t stand Mazda. I don’t get it, but it’s one of those things I’ve just learned to accept.
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:23 |

Liberals have made it possible for you to breathe better. We’ve insisted on airbags to save your life, and demanded ABS and stability control to save your life again. So many conservatives we’ve saved, yet you still punch the hippie that saved your life. Roll coal, but damn your children to cancer and breathing problems.

She hates Mazda, seemingly for no reason, but with the passion of a thousand rising suns. And the transmission problems had me worried about the Renegade up until this point. Kinda glad it got otherwise eliminated.
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:24 |

She can’t stand Mini. Her ex liked them and apparently that ruined them for her.

Just in case the sarcasm wasn't clear: I don't own 3 diesel trucks. I've never even driven a diesel. I think people who roll coal should have awful things done to them and their vehicles destroyed
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:28 |

She thinks everyone else will be lining up like sheep to the slaughter to get them all fixed to keep the hippy liberal dream alive. And anyone who sells them back to get something else are the real patriots. Or something like that. Her dad did a lot of political nonsense brainwashing on her growing up.

Crossovers are awful.

If you get a chance, drive a diesel truck. It’s a blast. The torque is addicting.

Those things are hideous

Fair enough. I looked at the Renegade and Countryman when I was shopping last year. The Countryman really surprised me in terms of space inside and quality... but the long-term reliability scared me. HR-V wasn’t quite out yet then. In the end I decided they were all a little too small and got a compact rather than subcompact, but the HR-V and Encore seem like solid little vehicles.
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:37 |

I don't oppose diesels. I strongly oppose coal rolling.

Can we get a post of your wife's feelings on every make, and possibly every model, currently on sale? I'm finding this fascinating.

Does her dad read infowars.com?

Chrysler and GM products are crap. If I HAD to have one, it’d be the honda
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:39 |

To be fair, I asked one of their neighbors why she chose the Camry(not in a dickish way, just curious) over anything else, and her answer: Because owning a Mazda sent her to the safe choice because it was an unreliable mess. Their reliability just hasn’t been there, and while they may be there now, the past still counts.
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:42 |

Yeah, not only is it terrible for the environment, it’s nearly as bad for the engine.
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:48 |

I'm in the same boat, I was thinking HR-v of the ones you listed but then I read that VW may be dropping its 4motion sportwagen this year before the end of the year including the alltrack model, if that happens, that's what I wanna do
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:52 |

Sarcasm? Because Ray used to have his mom review cars and for some reason that really was fascinating.
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:53 |

I discussed the new reliability vs old ones, because she said the old ones were junk and you never see them. I said the new ones were, and she says “how does anyone know yet?”. She’s smart.

Funny how stuff like effects people. I'm not allowed to have a beat up old Toyota pickup because my wife's big ex had one.
![]() 07/04/2016 at 20:56 |

I don’t know what he reads politically. I try to not discuss politics with him because there is no winning or joy with him. Either you’re liberal and you’re wrong, or you’re conservative, but not as much so as him and he has to “put-conservative” you. So I crush him with car knowledge.

The Alltrac is ridiculously enticing, but she says the back isn’t big enough. Not that any of these mini-crossovers have much room, but she has these ideas and won’t listen.

Mine’s the same way with hyundais.

GM makes an awesome car now. Remember the Encore is Sonic-based, so it rocks.

I think Mazda latest announcement will have less people sucking them off. If you want a fun family car, get a Focus ST, not a Mazda 6. They do efficiency well now, and they have made fun cars, but really, they are just commuter cars now that are mostly hideous. ESPECIALLY THE CX-3.
I would get the HR-V. It should be headache free for quite a while. If I wasn’t looking for fun, I would have went Honda or Toyota again .
![]() 07/04/2016 at 21:02 |

Honestly, the HRV seems to be the best choice from there.
If you want a (very) wild card, the Fiat 500X. Fiat needs sales, so my guess is they’re willing to make a good deal.
![]() 07/04/2016 at 21:02 |

Calm down, I never said I agree with her. I take the economic stance. If we just install a massive spike in every steering wheel, everyone will drive as safely as possible. Lives will be saved, and emissions will go through the floor.
Also, I think we’ll only truly improve cars by fixing public transportation. Many people would be off the road if they had realistic alternatives.
![]() 07/04/2016 at 21:25 |

Nope! I just love the insight into why people like or hate brands, especially when it’s based on personal experiences and not something empirical like reliability.
I’m nearly positive that the reason I love Jags as much as I do is because a lady in a Jag was the only person who stopped and bought lemonade from me when I had a lemonade stand as a kid.
ETA: That should have been in reply to your “sarcasm?” comment. Thanks, Kinja.

Thanks for that - had ‘84 Jetta Turbodiesel, ‘87 300D, and that’s about it on the diesels ...

I have the same hangup too. I used to think the Caliber SRT was the coolest thing in the world, then my cheating whore of an ex (which also happened to be my first long term relationship for extra baggage) got one. And now I can’t stand them.

The only thing is the 500X IS a Renegade, just with an Italian accent.

So a couple examples from her:
- She loves VWs for the quality and affordability, but the only one that she actually wants to drive is the Golf. Her first vehicle was a Ramcharger, but her first car was a Rabbit and she’s had 3 Rabbits/Golfs in total. TDIs are her jam, and this rigamouroue is breaking her heart. Its hard to watch.
- She loves all CDJR brands as that is 85% of what her family has driven. Her parents buy new cars way too often, but there’s always 2/3 in their driveway of a Wrangler, Ram, and Challenger. Her personal loyalties of that fall to Jeep, but she knows having them in the city is difficult, and ultimately they’re expensive to repair and maintain when they break (and they do).
- Bimmers are her luxury car of choice. Her parents always have one 2-door at all times and if it isn’t a Challenger, it’s a Z. In her mind, it’s THE movie-star convertible and she’s Audrey Hepburn whenever she gets to drive them. She also thinks the X6 is the coolest thing ever because it’s “like a mom car and muscle car in one".

Dare I say a Nissan Juke?
Once you get over how it looks, it is a great value. I have a 6spd FWD Juke and can’t say anything bad. The engine is amazing; it loves to rev, handles pretty good for a crossover, and it has a really good AWD system (if you like CVT’s).

Oh I see, good luck with your buy!

Bummer I've driven one, it was fun. Stupid, and ugly but fun.

I’ve suggested the Juke because I’ve driven one and agree, they’re pretty good. But she says she can’t get over the look.

Why has she given up on VW then? I mean, I get feeling like changing the cars to meet emission regulations is ruining the cars, but considering that they’re now following the same rules that everyone else is (in theory), it seems weird to just abandon VW outright. If anything, considering the number of customers that they’ll lose over the cheating scandal, she could actually make a protest statement by buying another VW.
Totally agree on the Z love, except for one thing:
Audrey drives an E-Type (well, technically Peter O’Toole drives an E-Type, but Audrey rides in it and drives it in a scene)

Well she hasn’t completely jumped ship. She had mused that she wouldn’t mind a GTI. It’s just not AWD or the height she wants. She may make those sacrifices to get one though haha. They’re going for a song right now anyway.
